I've seen some stout 830s, but none at 80hp. They will come close to hanging with a JD 4020, but no cigar. What they will do is work at about half the cost on fuel for a 4020. Get a 930. Work circles around the 4020, and use about 2/3 of the fuel. If you think 70hp will do the job, just go ahead and get the 830. That's probably more realistic on the HP. You'll save a lot of money by going with Case. Lest invested in the tractor and less spent on fuel. Heck, if you buy it and if flies apart the next day, you can only lose 2 grand. Can't say that about a JD 4020.

I have a 1961 830 eight-speed diesel with an M&W turbo on it. On the dyno it makes 92 hp. It served well on the corn chopper until we moved up to the Field Queen. I think an 830 would be hard-pressed to work with a 4020 if it didn't have a turbo.

Hey Hawkeye,
I gotta know how you worked that turbo on to that engine? I have a 1959 801B with the 267 diesel and was trying to figure out how to put a turbo on it.
Thanks,
Larry

All of the parts necessary to adapt the turbo to the 830 came as part of the M&W kit. Actually the tractor was purchased with the turbo already installed, but all the parts were supplied by M&W.

It has good power, but one has to be careful and watch the exhaust temp and water temp because it will get over heated pretty quickly in heavy pulling. The engine has been very durable having only been overhauled once in its life. Still, I've always questioned the value of an add-on turbocharger to an engine that wasn't designed for it simply because of the heat.

I bought an 830 Comfort King in 1966 and it was sold as 82 HP, up a little on the previous model with the 'clamshell' guards, but also 10% faster through the gears so that seemed to offset the extra power, but covered the ground. Wonderful tractor and is still going on my son's farm after one engine overhaul mid 1990's. Highly economical on fuel. Still in original paint. It's main job was driving a New Holland 36 six foot chopper on Ryegrass and clover dairy farm pasture for silage.

The 830 Case-O-Matic was rated at 63.74 horsepower at Nebraska. Sounds like a good price for the condition... Gene

Tractor data dot com would be a great place to verify that information. I have a 1959 801B with the 267 cu in deisel and it says that it's like 54 hp

sounds like a fair price compared to what I have seen at auctions recently. My uncle owned both a 64 4020 and I think a 62 830 Case, he always said the Case had more lugging power and used less fuel , the 4020 had brakes and real power steering ,thats about all I know !
