511b fails to turn over

This summer I bought a '58 511b because it was a price I couldn't pass up. It ran quite well, even though it was missing on #3 cylinder (plug wire???). Anway, it's been sitting, waiting for me to get the time to play with it so I went outside a while back and tried to start it. Nothing. Battery is charged but the solenoid just clicks and the starter doesn't make a peep. Took a pair of pliers and tried to jump them across the solenoid terminals but still nothing. Removed the starter and connected it to a battery charger and it spins up. Cleaned up the mating surfaces of the starter and flywheel housing, re-installed it--nothing. I would suspect the solenoid but figured if I crossed the terminals like I did it should have spun up. Any suggestions?

I would suspect the connections in the solenoid.
Pliers should have work.
Jeremy may be right, cables almost broke.
I removed the cap on the solenoid and cleaned washer and contacts 2 weeks ago, found that the brushes in the starter was stuck. Might be your problem, when you removed the starter it shook them loose.

Check the voltage at the starter terminal when trying to start. If none or low follow the wires back till you get something. Good Luck DK

Thanks, DKase, I"ll have to do that. If I recall correctly, there was voltage but will double-check it. If so, should I remove the brushes and make sure they"re not cruddy?
