my 970 occasionaly starts to miss for no apparent reason, then it eventually dies. then i take the kine off that goes to the sediment bulb and blow it out. once i do that and pump it so the injectors are full, then it starts right up. it will go for a while more before missing again, but not as bad. before it was ice in the tank but i have since drained the water traps and put fuel de-icer. is it the wrong # fuel? i don't have blendedin there right now but am gonna fill it back up with blended. i put that "Diesel 911" in last weekend and it ran fine until today and did it again. do they not run good on #2 fuel in the winter? do you guys think it's just dirt in the tank?
thanks

I have had almost the identical problem with my Ford 5000 diesel. As cahess as said, mEl is right. I had put a new shutoff valve into the fuel tank, algae will plug the screen. Let the fuel filters do the job instead. Since I figured out what the H*** was happening, anytime it starts starving for fuel, I just have to unscrew the line before the filters and blow (filtered) compressed air back into the tank to dislodge crap on the screen. Runs fine for several days or weeks after that, depending on if I have loaded the tractor on my trailer and hauled it anyplace. That seems to shake all the crap loose from the side of the tank and end up plugging the screen. DOUG

The very early 70 series had a nylon type screen that pushed into the tank outlet fitting, later productions did not have them, it could be if it is a early unit it is still there and plugged up with dirt or algae, the homemade strainer described in the other post is something I use regularly and recommend, just did it to a 855e loader in our rental fleet, but it had to be a shorty as there is an internal brace or baffle in the tank. mEl

mEL has probably solved your problem . That little screen is unknown to most folks. It is mentioned in my 1070book. Remove an throw away.Alge an other stuff will show up in screen on little pump an you will have to clean couple times.

We have had same problem With at least 2, 70 series, it is more than likely dirt in tank that gets stuck in line or or fittings. Drain tank take valve out of bottom of tank and make a stand pipe 3 in. long out of copper that fits inside of valve inlet drill 8 or 10 1/8 in. holes crossways through the pipe and pinch top end shut works great ...JIM

My neighbors got a bad batch of diesel fuel this fall. It plugged the filters on his White sawmill unit and fouled the injectors. We drained the fuel and replaced the filters and got fresh fuel from another source and the problem went away. He ran another engine on the same fuel and had the same problems, so before it went that far, we drained that fuel and drained and and rebled the filters with clean fuel and no problems since.
The fuel company checked the fuel and replaced all of it and cleaned his tank.
Just a thought, but the first thing would be to try new filters. Especially if bio diesel blend is used... Gene
