I loved my 800. Great for planting by shifting to low Case for more hydraulic power and lower speed for turning. Working ground and want to pick up a rock, just shift to low and climb off. Hop back on and hit the foot throttle and be on my way.
However, I like my 700, basically same as 400, for baling. The clutch is much smoother for starting without jolting the wagon with the baler running at rated speed. ... Gene

I respect Camboted's opinion a lot, just wanted to give TVB an opinion of the 400...I've driven one since I was old enough to reach the pedals some 40 years ago, and can't think of a more rugged tractor for it's HP size. Case advertized the 400 as having a gear for every job, and they didn't lie. Baling hay with the 400 is a joy, 3rd gear is perfect for most haying, and having the pto lever located as it is makes it perfect for dropping power to the baler on tight turns, and starting it back up. Both tractors will serve you well, I guess get the one that's in the best shape. Good luck TVB!

The 801 has more power, but it really depends on what you want it for. If you are doing a lot of pto work, like baling hay, or blowing snow, even bush-hogging, the Case-o-matic is hard to beat. Granted, if you ever need tranny repairs the 400 is going to easier and cheaper to fix. Personally, I'd go for the C-O-M, but both are good tractors. If you do get the C-O-M make sure you check with someone like John Saeli for an on-line operator's lesson. Used correctly they last a long time.

Agreed with All reponses ,,My Cousin and Brother each have a 400 Dry clutcher ,, Great tractor , ,,. But not the Elegant Lady My 800 Could be , Which they covet in spite of it's repairable ills .Need to look at the pump to get more pressure for the tranny ,.For this reason , I would prefer the Dry Clutch , I prefer to work on things I can easily understand , If you have kids driving on hillsides that tend to be reckless and will not listen,, BEWARE , Lock the BRAKES, Case O Matics will roll off into the hog pond , experience LOL! , Really depends on CONDITION , If The Case O matic Tranny ran out good and pressured up appropriately and held for an hour , Then CASE O MATIC Will be a thrill to have. They are Not HARD TO FIX IF YOU KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR .. Been around them for 40 years ,So i would know what to watch for ,As a 12 year old , i was not sure I was up to this used newcomer automatic . In Time, I Loved taking off ,then kicking it up in High Gear , or pulling Road Loads and dropping into Automatic drive until we made it to the top ,and kickingit into direct .. And , for Turns , discing 5th ,Planting 4th, Raking6th &7th , Clay Knoll Plowing 3rd or 4th, Baling OH WOW ! Yessirrie !.. However they are the most misunderstood tranny Case Built in 1958 , I Like to watch novices Try shifting the double H pattern, And Then Shake their heads When She Acts like an Automatic,, Few folks took the time to get Well Versed with this tranny . BUT I DID .. BEST WISHES jIM
