Have a 730 Comfort King with Power Steering issues. The whole system has been rebuilt by the dealer but still the front wheels wobble so much that the tractor is to dangerous to drive unless you drive very slowly. Has any one else had this problem or knows of a solution to my steering woes.

Brian,

My 730 CK did the same thing. I'm no mechanic but my father in law is. Here is how he fixed mine. It was very simple. The big nuts that tighten down on top of the spindle shaft needed shims under them. Went to the hardware store baught 5 or 6, 50 cents each (really they are just big washers). Put them on top of the spindle shaft then tighened the nut back down.

Like I said I'm no mechanic and I was thinking steering box ect, but these shims eliminated all wobble on mine.

My 730 does that. On mine it is caused by the splines in the spindle that are worn. That is where the steering arm connects to the wheels. I slipped some shims made from thin pieces of metal in the gaps and it helped a little.

Is the tractor a narrow front? I have one with a narrow front that does the same thing as you described. I have removed the power steering belt so I can use the tractor. With the pump connected the wheels will begin to oscillate back and fourth to where I have to come to a stop. My front wheels have the incorrect offset to them and therefore I have to have the wheels dished out instead of in. I believe this is the cause of the shimmy but have not gotten different rims to check that theory. Good luck.

Has the mechanical linkage been checked? Wheel bearings, spindle arms, spindle bushings, tie rod ends, universal joints in the steering shaft. Wouldn't hurt to check the toe in, should be about 1/8". Good luck.

Check your pivot pins and bushings under the engine where the axle attaches to the tractor. Be sure you jack up the front of the tractor a bit to get the weight off the axle and you may be surprised how much play is in the axle. Next check your ball joints on the main steering arm and all of the joints on the tie rods. Last but not least, check your toe-in according to your operators manual. These little things can make a big difference.

The newer systems had a tube arrangement off the top cap to constantly keep the system bled so I doubt that air is the problem, there is a nut on the front of the unit that is accessable throught the opening on the casting covered by a two bolt plate. On the front of the ps valve there is a 3 bolt cover that has a nut behind it , there is a torque spec. procedeure to tighten the nut to the proper setting, this procedure takes the end play out of the valve but if overtightened will cause the steering to get tighter than it should causing noticable hard steering, there is also a special plate which is to be bolted on before any thing else is done, don"t turn the steering wheel with that cap off as the valve will "walk" in and out without the bolts to hold it in position, possibly dropping the inner o ring out of position and requiring you to completely remove the valve to replace it. also you must clean the area thoroughly to keep dirt from entering the unit. Valve end play is the probable cause of your problem, keep us posted!!!

mEL is right on about the end play in the steering shaft. Set this with the nut installed and tightened. End play, using a dial indicator, at .045 to .048 inches will let the valve function. If it is too tight, the valve will not allow the wheels to turm and if too loose will allow shimmy as the valve is over correcting... Gene

I had a similar problem with a 400. It had air in the system. Once I bled the air out it was OK. Not sure if that is your problem but might be a place to start.
