The old 800 is coming back together slowly but surely...I'm having a heck of time trying to get the radiator/fan shroud/side grills assemblies in place. Is there any harm or performance impact if I leave the fan shroud off? What a jigsaw puzzle that front end is...

Also, if anyone could send me some close up pics of all the throttle linkages at the bottom of the steering column it would be greatly appreciated. Sure wish I'd taken more "before" pics :) By the way, it's a gas engine.

Thanks in advance ... ~Steve

you have to put the fan, shroud and radator on together with everything loose. Then put the shroud over the water pump as far forward as you can get it. Then lean the rad forward and put the fan on the pump. You"ll probaly want to attach the cooler liness next. Then.. put the rad and shroud in place and slide the hood and side panels on over top and fasten the shroud to the side panels, then the rad to the hood frame and the frame to bolster (you may need to reverse that last step??). Its a pain especially when the original nuts break loose and spin in the sheet metal. The dry clutch is a bit easier as you don"t have to wrestle the cooler lines. GOod luck.

Thanks for the pointers, incase - much appreciated. All new cage nuts and other hardware is being used as part of the restore, so that part is not so bad... Is there any downside to simply leaving the shroud off?

I would guess not. I don"t think the shroud is needed to hold anything together. The fan WILL be less effective without it since its only attached to the side panels. I"d give it another try if it were mine. One advantage is it is one less thing the fan may hit. Where did you get the cage nuts? I could use some too for the front sheet metal.

Found my cage nuts at a local ACE hardware, but it was the only ACE hardware in the area that had them. Auto parts stores used to carry them, but no more.

I'm really tempted to leave the shroud off. I expect the fan will be less effective at cooling the radiator water but I don't expect to work the old girl that hard anymore for the rest of her life.

Google McMaster Carr. Look in their fasteners sites and you will find cage nuts. They offer ones for different sheet metal gauges. The ones for my floor step plates need to be for thicker material that the ones for the tin and McMaster Carr lets you choose nuts for the right sheet metal gauge. I have ordered a bunch of stuff from these guys. They are a litle more pricey than some sites but they have what you need and that is worth the little extra to me. You can get shifter knobs that replacate the Case knobs too.

Steve,
Too bad it's not a diesel I have the linkage lay outs that you would need and could fax them to you. I have a 801B and yeah it's a tight fit but it can be done. I got it running finally and ended up cutting a trans cooler line with the generator belt and had to pull everything back apart to replace it. If there are any other parts that you are looking for I have a 1963 830 COM that I bought for some parts for my 801 and I'm getting ready to part out/scrap out the rest of the 830.
Good luck,
Larry

Larry,

Do you have the belt tightening bracket for the 801B that goes between the block and the alternator/generator? I have an 801B I am rebuilding and that bracket was broke when I bought it. Call me at 859-472-1826 If you have questions about what part I am talking about.

Also - does the 830 have a wide front? I would like to change my 801B to a wide front, but have not been able to find a front end for it. I have been told the front end off an 830 can be made to work.
Thanks,
Shawn
