The photos may or may not post. I'm excited about getting her running again. She has almost no compresssion (you can turn the motor by hand by turning the radiator fan). Some rust damage. Tires are pretty good. Hi ribs on the fronts and Rice/cane R2s on the rears 23.1x30 in great shape! The tag says 832 and then 8324719. Correct me if I'm wrong, but does the 3 mean diesel and the 2 means western special? Not sure what the 8 means, if anyone could chime in here. I imagine this machine will at least need a set of rings - any suggestion on best place to purchse? Thanks Joe Stewart

That's the exact same tractor I have except your fenders are MUCH bigger. Mine is the 931 Rowcrop. These tractors will FLY down the highway. First one I ever saw with a speedometer. The guy I got mine from still has two running 930's for sale, I think they are Wheatlands, the seat is low and to the rear, somewhat like an Orchard model. Mine likes to be pumped up with the handpump and a short squirt of ether to start the first time, but fires up no problem the rest of the day. She sits a lot between outings, though. KY Jim

Hey, that compression release lever sounds like a great idea! Because I mean this motor's compression is woefully low! I'll try to get out there today and look for it. What would the lever look like?

The previous owner told me that he thought that the rings failed to seat, implying that he had recently replaced them (the grease deposit pattern on the head and various nuts and bolts tells me that its been a LONG TIME since this engine has been apart). Then he told me that he had it running recently and it sounded like it was running only on a couple of cylinders. Not sure what to believe at this point. I've never seen it run.

When we tried to start it by pulling it with another tractor while in gear, it popped a few times and put out a lot of white smoke, but never fired up. I took off the valve covers and made sure all the valves were opening and closing as I spun the engine (They were - and it looked pretty clean in there). Then I drained the oil (it was dark black and of increased viscosity, but I could not feel any metal shavings in it and there was no water in it). Then I took off the manifolds and that's where it stands right now. Haven't removed the heads yet.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Hope to look at it again this week sometime, weather permitting. J. Stewart

JUST trying to save unnecessary work ,Before taking this lady apart , HAVE YOU DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM IS PRIMED WITH CORRECT FUEL //NOT GASOLINE stranger things have happened ,ESPECIALLY WHEN SOMEONE HAD IT BEFORE YOU !!!,,ALSO MAKE SURE THE SYSTEM IS BLED THROUGH ALL AREAS AND THAT FUEL IS GETTING TO THE INJECTORS .. A LITTLE EITHER SNORT WILL NOT HURT TO GET HER STARTED. MAKE SURE AIR FILTER IS OPEN AND NOT PLUGGED UP WITH TRASH ,,

Thanks for reply. We bled system with that little hand pump and we got plenty of red (off road) diesel in return, although I never did crack the lines going to the injectors. We tried ether twice when we were trying to pull start it and we got a couple of pops and a lot of white smoke. Great suggestion on the air filter, because I subsequently took the bottom pan off the filter and it was filled with water! I'm still left with an engine that has very low compression (so low that you can turn engine with one hand pulling on the radiator fan with not even very much effort and no belt slippage). I went out there today and did not see any sign of a compression release device, so I'm probably going to remove the cylinder heads and see what the valves, pistons and rings look like. Will keep posted. J. Stewart

Just trying to keep a guy from buying a $100gasket set , White smoke is water ,, perhaps from the air breather or worse , head gasket or cracked head ,,, At any rate , that motor should run , Worn out or not , then you can learn about its ailements while it is running , try opening the injector lines and let the fuel pump pump thru While cranking or pulling,, All CASE TRACTORS HAVE REQUIRED THIS EFFORT WHEN THEY WILL NOT TAKE UP FUEL ,,, bEST WISHES JIM

I got it started - more pics in reply to J Heitkemper, 11-28-2007 18:19:34
OK, I had another gentleman use another tractor to pull me around the pasture with the 930 in gear. Ether just caused it to pop a couple of times, so I guessed fuel was not getting to injectors. Cracked the lines at the injectors and pulled => fuel came out in short order. Took about ten minutes of pulling but she finally started up. Puts out A LOT of smoke, but seems to run ok otherwise. Number six injector is not injecting - the rest work fine. The three point lift works; forgot to check if PTO worked. There appears to be tons of blow-by. I parked it in the back of the barn and hopefully will take off the heads in the next couple of month. Thanks for all input.

Good Work Joe !!...if the goal is to have a puller and hard worker tractor ,, And You like tinkering and have the money to spend to fix it and do her up right , HAVE AT IT ! However , if you are trying to make ends meet and are not eager to overhaul this beast of a girl ,, You could try some LUCAS oil additive in the engine oil and LUCAS fuel conditioner in the fuel ,and tool around a while to see if she improves , If the tractor has been setting a while , All sorts of smoke will belch forth ,especially from old Fuel ,, Best Wishes ,, jim

Recomend you not turn engine with fan . You can crack blade an have it fly in radiator , Put socket on front of crank instead an turn that way from under front of tractor.

You must have read the tag wrong...it appears to be a 930 western special and it is a later model, so it will not have a decompressor. My advice is not to waste your time with new rings...put in sleeves and pistons..do it once, do it right.

that having a 401 it is a 930 does it have a compesion release lever it would be on the right side at the back of the engine that would make it easy to turn over

The 8 means it is an "830" not a "930".

I'm a little confused here. The hood says "930". Perhaps I read the aluminum tag wrong? I'll have to look again, but were there any variants produced that would explain this descrepency? Or perhaps someone switched hoods. Motor is the 401 diesel. Thanks for the reply! J. Stewart

It is definately a 930, you are right about the 3 meaning a diesel & the 2 meaning western special. The serial numbers all started with 8
