I have run across a really straight clean complete 430 that I can buy for scrap weight price. By the dipstick, it shows to have water in the oil. Do these engines have wet sleeves that might be culprit or is it more likely a block or head?

I can't reach in anywhere to turn it over to tell if it might be stuck. Its hemmed in a corner behind 5 other tractors where I can't roll it in gear to check either.

In a worst case senario... what other models/machines shared engines with a 430, and how hard would a complete engine or major engine parts (block, head) be to come by?

Were all 430's triple range? If not how can you tell if one is. There's a lever on the top right side of the transmission case that has short throws front to back and has 3 notches. Is that a hi/n/lo shifter, or is it a triple range?

Get a half a pto shaft and engage the pto and put the shaft on and you should be able to turn the engine over if not stuck. 430 had dual and triple-range and they use the same lever and position. Like the other guy said if you put it in center position and pull out towards the wheel about 1/2 inch and shift up you have a triplerange and found low.

Loosen the drain plug to see if it's got just water or if it has antifreeze in it. If it;s just water then it's possible it come from the exhaust. Anti-freeeze means it come from the engine which could be head gasket, sleeve or worse.

Theres a really neat IH 2444 lo-pro industrial with all its military markings still in place and a IH Super A Industrial that I wish I would bring home. Theres also a IH460U, IH460U-LP and a IH464D

The 430 that we had was a dual-range. The lever was on the left side. Your saying that it has three positions on the lever. If it's dual-range that would be low, neutral and high. If you can put it in the center position and then slide it out, away from the tractor, about an inch and then move it forward or backward into another position, it should be a triple-range

All have wet sleeves. All dual range tractors that I know of has the lever on the right and triple ranges have the lever on the left and will have the shift pattern there as well. Dual range should be 1965 and on up.

My 630 triple range is on the right, 530 is the same way and all 511b/611b triple ranges range shift lever is on the right side I think the 430 was the same way. The left side lever is a secondary clutch (dry clutch models) that stops tractor movment while the PTO continues to turn.
