Hello, I am looking for some info on a 1940 DC. The tractor is mostly complete but stuck. Looks like a lot of parts are different from other DC's that I have looked at. Has a adj wide front axle, bolt on rear cast wheels(flat), mag driven through generator, fuel tank has the gas starting tank inside the big tank, has a hand brake on the right side and round pedals that operate under the axle for the turning brakes. Is missing the grill and manifold will have to be replaced. Do these differences make the tractor more desirable? Tractor will need tires and paint also, is it a good project or better as parts, it is destined for scrap if I pass it up. Thanks for any thoughts on it, Mike.

The adjustable wide front axle alone is worth more than the scrap price.

What is a good adj wide front axle worth? Is there any demand for SC adj wfe out there? Is a 1940 DC more desirable than a later model? Thanks, Mike.

Save it from scrap.....those rearend parts are interchangable with the earlier C series tractors. With a little looking you can find parts.

As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have a 39 DC3 that has been in the family for 60 yrs or more and other than the wfe on the one you are looking at it is the same tractor. They have band brakes versus discs on later tractors, bands work much better and are more reliable, ours always worked well on the old girl. The parts it needs are available out there, I have a couple grilles and repo new manifolds are available, good used are drying up.
engine parts are pretty much the same through. the D series. With a good s&p kit with popups and a high compression head and a carb change 50 + is very realistic. If your desire is to keep it original then the generator/ mag drive will be a problem to optomize the timing and hold the it and the 6 volt system will not start the engine combo that I described,it was marginal when even a 4 inch kit was installed, it can easily be changed to take the new style flange style mags or distributors and water elbows that will allow mounting a modern charging system and a good starter will work for years on 12 volts. just a few thoughts from one who has done it.
