Gene, Caseman:

Pulling worked great once I found the right gear. Didn't accomplish much until I figured out I had her in 2nd rather than 6th gear. She fired right up -ran rougher than heck for about 5 minutes until all the raw fuel from yesterday burned out. But then she smoothed out and actually purred. The engine sounded great, no unusual noises or skips. I'm hoping the last owner's problems were just fuel filters that needed to be replaced - they thought it had valve problems (I figured heads).

I do need to replace the water pump - I had water flying everywhere, but I knew that. And I have a few fuel leaks to clean up. I still can't get the battery to start the tractor, even right after it ran for probably 20 minutes. Is it possible the starter is bad, still functional, but sucks way too much juice? I can barely get it to turn over on the battery, and the battery is a good marine battery from my boat. Best source for a water pump?

Thanks,
Tim

Have you tried to grease the water pump. Not sure if this is one that grease pushes the seal tighter. You might give that a try if you haven't. Also try using 2/0 battery cables. I use a good single 12 volt in my 702B, 801B, 802B and 812B. I don't use mine in the winter so that makes a difference to me. When using 2 batteries make sure they are both new, a bad battery will ruin a good one.

Caseman - I did grease the heck out of the pump. John Saeli is just up the road from me and he gave me that advice - didn't make any difference. I have the pump in a box now, sending it out tomorrow to rebuild.

The manifold heater is an add-on on this tractor. It looks like someone unhooked the ether injection line and put the heater in the same spot. Looks very much like the one we had on our later model 430 Diesel.

Looks like I need two batteries for sure and will take that on next after the water pump is back...

Thanks,
Tim

mEl.

I have noticed you mentioned more than once about a manifold preheat option. I asume that this is like a glow plug in the manifold. Is this something that came out on the later model 30 series. I can remenber looking one up a switch for either a 1030 or 70 series. Can these be converted to the 00 B series.

Yeah, it is a coil heater in the intake manifold where the big flat nut is if the unit is not equipped with one, it has a solenoid to activate it and it will require the heavy battery setup as it draws considerable amps from the batts even before cranking is initiated, I suspect it was probably a option as I am from Penna and tractors ordered for here were probably ordered that way by the local dealer

I also have a 830 eagle hitch lo profile with the air cleaner on the LH side. Mine will start real cold useing only the manifold preheat in most weather. we installed a pair of HD 1000 amp big truck batteries with screw top terminals, made up the heaviest truck type cables and installed a heavy alternator to charge all , I also added a heavy #8 wire from the alt to the ammeter and from there to the starter hot post as the wiring in the charging circuit is woefully inadequate for an alternator with any output worth mentioning.

Even two 12 volt batteries in parallel didn't help my 830. The starter had a bad field coil. If you take the starter in, have them check that out.

Tim If by marine battery you mean deep discharge it will never discharge fast enough to crank a big engine. It is made for powering trolling motors in boats.

If not I would get the starter checked. Jerry

Suggest you fix that water pump ASAP. This vintage Case Tractors have the fan very close to the radiator. About 1/2" if I recall. It won't take much wobble on the water pump shaft for the fan to quickly cause a $400 radiator re-core. Sometimes the water pump won't even leak.

Tim;

Glad you got the tractor running.

You will find that 1 battery is not adequate to turn the diesel over. Original system used 2, 6 volt batteries in series. I have changed my 700 to 2, 12 volt batteries in parallel and the difference is noticable. I use 2 group 24F batteries and #1 welding cables with crimp or solder-on connector terminals.
I have also converted to a Chrysler alternator and gives all the power needed... Gene

My 730 CK cranked slow until I put new cables on the battery, looked good from the outside but was corroded on the inside, and buy good ones that are larger than what you think you need. automotive cables are usually too small a gauge, I made mine from 4-0 welding cable. good luck, Shawn

When I first got my 830CK, it would barely crank over, even with a fully-charged battery. I took the starter to get it rebuilt, and shop said the motor shaft was bent and twisted! I ended up having to find a used starter, and it"s been much happier since.
