Hello all, I have been helping a friend with his 1959 Case 711-b and have come against a stumbling block. I am trying to adjust the idle and cannot seem to get any response from the idle screw. The tractor pulls fine on the main, but I would like to enrich the mixture at idle. The carb is a tsx-616 with the main mixture screw on top.

I would also like to ask about the capacity of the belly and where to check the level. My 65 takes 8 gallons, but this monster looks like it would take quite a bit more. Does TSC carry an approved lube?

Is there a trick to the dual range shift pattern? The decals are in place, but I spend most of my time attempting to get it in the proper gear.

Thanks in advance, Aaron

Aaron,

I am in the process of restoring (well, trying to get to run) a 59 701 B. I just drained and replaced the tranny oil. My manual also said 15 gallons. I found 5 gal pails of 80w90 at one of the chain auto stores - about $30 each. I only needed about half of the 3rd pail before I had oil running out the fill plug.

You also should drain the oil from the belt pulley portion of the resevoir - on the opposite side of the tractor.

If I ever get this running, I will try to top off and see if the rest of the pail will fit in.

John Saeli has been great supplying parts, information and advice on my project. You can contact him on this board.

Shift as the others have said. My 800 is hard to find gears in. The shifter is very loose and that could be your problem as well. When in 6th gear it hits the key and shuts if off if I"m not careful. Shouldn"t be that far up I"m sure. Play around with it so you learn the Lo-Hi and middle (called belt pully neutral...i think) neutrals so you get the feel for where they are.

Hi Aaron;

I have owned my 1959 701B diesel for 35 years. There are 4 detents horizontially on the shifter in each range. 1, 2, and 5,6 are at the extreme right. 1 detent click to the left is the hi/lo detent. Up is hi and down is lo. Extreme left and down is reverse, you can't move it up. 1 detent from the reverse position is 3, 4 and 7,8 position. Slower gears are always down and higher speeds are up. The clutch will coast to a complete stop, so do not be in a hurry to put it in gear.

Always be sure the tractor is stopped when shifting between ranges, as this gear set is probably the only weak area in this transmission and will not tolerate a lot of grinding.

I have replaced the hi/lo gearset in mine with one from a 800 and allows the engine to run a little faster and gives more pulling power. I work this tractor at 2200 RPM in the field at 65 horsepower and has been the most reliable tractor I have owned... Gene

Sounds like the Carb needs rebuilt or at least cleaned. I suspect the idle jet (port) is plugged or partially plugged.

Can't help you on the 700 Tranny capacity... Our Case girls that size are 800 & 830 Case-O-Matic (COM). Not sure the capacity would be the same for your manual clutch 700.
The 800 manual shows 15 gallons of 80-90 wt Gear lub.
The filler plug is under the seat. The full-level plug is on the right side just forward of the hydraulic pump. No matter the actual capacity, just fill-it-up to the full-level plug until it runs out.
Yes, TSC carries gear lub, at least around here, but it's rare that they have it in 5 gal pails anymore.

The trick to shifting dual-range is to find the center-of-neutral of whatever range your in and move into the other range neutral. The two neutrals are at either end of the lever stroke. The clutch must not drag. Shifting it quickly after you find the center-notch sometimes helps. Once in the Hi or Lo range neutral, the gear pattern is exactly the same for both. Again, shifting quickly usually helps the engagement.
