This is a follow up to my post of 10-21-07 in which I ask opions on the purchase of a Case LA.
Thanks to caseman-d and Walt Davies for responses. I have purchased the tractor, it is a 1949 Case LA Serial #5321615LA.
Pictures to follow at first opportunity and the purchase of Owners & Service Manuals which I see are available on E-Bay.

Thanks
Bill

Bill,
One other note that would have saved me a bunch of trouble. Go buy a new sediment bowl right away. The new ones have stand pipes that will keep the rust from plugging it up. You can also press a brass pipe into the old one if you have the right size.
Good luck & ask us questions. Lots of good LA folks on this sight willing to help out. Couldn't have fixed mine up without them.
Steve

Welcome to the Club Bill I suspect Gene Dotson will stop by to see how you are doing. Like any tractor it will be hard to work on but just remember every time that you remove something just clean and prime it that will save a lot of time later on.

go to this site to get a copy or just read the Magneto manual.

Bill, enjoy this old tractor, they were "King of the Hill" in their day.I get a kick out of others that say they burned alot of gas, that is because you got alot more done! Some of those comments are like the one my Dad told me of this farmer he was talking to and my Dad said to him,you sure had a nice crop this year, and the farmer said yea,but it was sure hard on the land!

I bought a LA that had sat outside for several years. I turned it over several times with the hand crank. Thought what the heck, added some gas, hooked up the battery and about the third time over it started. So Bill if your tank had been drained and is clean you may get lucky. You should turn engine over several times to make sure valves aren't stuck. Squirt some oil in cylinders first to provide some extra lubrication.

Glad to here you bought it. Sounds like you may have gotten a real bargin. Hope to see some pictures soon.

Hi Fred,
Congrats on your purchase. Mine sat for 19 years after being driven into a shed. You probably know all this, but here's some things I learned. Diesel fuel in the cylinders for a week loosened it up. Be REALLY careful of the push rods. The valves don't have much clearance and they ALL stick. You'll bend the push rods. Loosen the valves with something like Master Blaster before you crank it over by hand. Try to break it loose cranking backwards. Once I got it started I had 2 lazy valve springs. Slipped big washers under those two and runs great now. Another note: the valves WILL fall all the way into the cylinders when loosened, put a vise grip on them. Replaced all the fluids. Put Diesel fuel in Trany and ran about a half mile, really cleaned it up. Don't forget the extra drain plug for the engine oil on the opposite side where the engine meets the trany. A quart in there. It's in the Operator's manual which is still available at CaseIH dealers.
Make sure the Magneto has spark(I added oil and set the points and patched a shorted wire) but DON'T listen to your electrician older brother when he tells you to hang onto it & crank it over with your other hand. That hurts.
Have fun with your new toy,
Steve

Bill,

Where are you located? I have three case LA's none of which run. I hope to start restoring one next spring.

Fred,

I am just south of Logan,in Nibley. I don't know if you saw my previous post but the LA I bought was driven into the shed in 1989 and has not run since, but talking to the seller who is a good friend, I expect it to run without much trouble.

Bill
