I have aquired most of the part/service/owners manuals on the tractors I own so that I don't have too ask too many silly questions. However, many times the manuals assume that you have a mechanical background. I grew up using tractors, but not working on them. Anyone have a suggestion on a good general tractor repair book for dummies?

In my opinion, the more general the repair manual is the less useful it is. An aftermarket manual that covers a variety of tractor models is not as good a the manufacturer's manual for the specific tractor model.

Try Amazon.com they have lots of books you should find one that will help. Roger Welshes has put together a few of them.

I have some of his tractor humor books. Funny stuff. I will check out some of his others. I had found an old textbook on power mechanics at a yard sale a while back and it has been a great reference. I was hoping to find the same on tractors. General Power Mechanics is the name of the textbook that I have...probably a high school shop textbook. Thanks for the help.

I can't help you with a good book, but I'll sure be watching to see what others suggest.

My favourite is when a manual tells you something to the effect that "further dissassembly is obvious". Likely to someone who has worked on tractors for a while or is in a shop with experienced people around, but less so when its the first time.

Got a few chuckles out of the repair book question. I recently purchased a case s and when reading the itt manual on how to repair the brakes it stated loosen the brake bolts, the rest is obivious. It took me one month to get the brakes apart. The obivious to a real mechanic was sure different than to me.I guess thats what makes the tractor repair hobby such a interesting one.

It's a great hobby. I just hate asking busy people to explain basic stuff. I grew up using tractors, not working on them. I try to keep the mecanical experts in reserve for those really difficult problems that books can't help you with.
