well, after further investigation ; w/ the clutch out, the niether the range selecter nor the transmission will shift into gear (gears gnashing). the pto seems to work w/ no load and both the remote and eagle hitch seem to work. when i let the clutch out w/ it in gear, there is additional "whiring" noise comming from the trans. thanks in advance for the help. td

Sounds like Lincolnj is guessing right to me. Your trouble seems to be in the rear end. You're looking for a broken shaft, pin, key or gear teeth. Probably need to take the seat off and take the cover off under the seat as well as the shifter cover to inspect.

The link between the trasmission and the rear end is the counter shaft. It is possible that it broke. I'm not sure if you would be able to see it if you pulled the pto off or not. Are you certin the dual range lever is engaged in either high or low, and not in between?

Have you tried to see if it will move in direct drive? Can you tell if the transmission gears are turning? When you try moving the dual range lever, or the transmission lever when the clutch pedal is out does it feel like the gears are turning?

Sounds like it yanked the eye out of the clutch disc. Look for an inspection hole in the bell housing. You may be able to tell something from there. If all else fails, pull the shifter out with it in gear, and see if the transmission gears are turning. If not, then it's probably time to split it. I don't know anything about the COM,there may be something with it,too.Good Luck, either way...

That might be hard to do, Tim, because a COM doesnt have a clutch and you can't take the shifter/top plate off with the tractor in gear...has to be in neutral. I'd start by checking the range selector (low/high)...it might be that it just fell out of gear. Loud snaps are hard to diagnose...but I'd start by checking all your linkages are properly joined...such as the "clutch pedal" linkage and then check all the fluid levels and filters. Check to see if the 3 point works and remotes work (if possible)...then report back.
