My father-in-law bought a 1971 580CK without an engine. (Previous owner removed its gas engine to overhaul it, then decided to sell the tractor.) My father-in-law already had a 188 diesel engine, so we installed it. On start-up, oil flowed out of the flywheel opening at the starter. He figured that the torque converter was bad, so he split the tractor and rebuilt it. Put everything back together and still has the same problem. He's fairly confident that he did as the manual instructed. Can't figure out the problem. (It also has a hydraulic clutch.) We don't know if it's anything he did, or if the previous owner did something. Regardless, he's so close to finishing the entire rebuild that we'd like to solve this problem quickly. Any ideas as to what is wrong, forgotten, etc., would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Paul

I've had this happen on my 69 580 CK when I had the starter rebuilt. I tightened the bolts that hold on the starter and the problem is gone. Should not be a big deal to fix. Gasket and tighten. Good luck.

The bell is wet on the early 580 series up to the C series, hope you gasketed the split at the engine, the TC is supposed to leak and will not cause your problem, the starter is supposed to be sealed but I have seen many aftermarket rebuilds that are not sealed to keep oil from getting to the windings. Also the starter must be gasketed, if oil leaks from the front endcap of the starter its either not a sealed starter or the bushing and lipseal are probably shot. mEl
