After cutting a pasture for about an hour my 530 gasser sputtered and stopped. Gas guage doesn"t work. I put some gas in but it won"t start. It spins and is getting gas. I pulled No. 1 spark wire and no fire. No. 2 has a weak spark. Pulled the distributor cap cleaned the rotor and contact points in the cap. Tried again thinking maybe carb was flood...no soap.
Engine started as always, this morning, first crank and ran with a little bit of a miss, as usual.
This machine is fairly new to me and I haven"t worked out all of the kinks yet...now this.
My first guess would be to change the spark wires and work back until I get a good spark. Any pointers? I"m no mechanic.
Thanks, Jacques

Yup, got a 530 with finicky points also. You may think you have them clean but a continuity check across the points when closed is the only way to know for sure.

My 530 had a habit of doing the same thing, as well as my 300b. I found that on the 530, the needle in the carb would stick closed in the seat and the carb would run out of fuel. I could get to start by rapping the bowl on the carb with my pliers. I overhauled the carb and have had no problem since. Also, the points on the 300b with same dist. seems to be finicky. Moisture is a problem with no-start after storage and I get a little grunge on the point contacts. I have also had it happen when running and I sandpaper the points as a quick fix and spray some elec. contact cleaner on point set.

I had a similar problem with my 350. Turned out to be a chaffed spot on the insulation on the lead to the condensor. It didn't look all that bad but caused grief when things warmed up.

Next time it quits, get off the tractor as quick as you can, pull the coil wire out of the dist cap, put the wire about 1/4' from a good ground and crank the engine over. Make sure that you have it in neutral or in the start position. If there's no spark, there's a good possibility that the coil is bad. It could also be the condenser. When they are going bad, they seem to act up when they are warm. Other problems can be ign switch and wiring.

Before you spend a nickel... Take of the distributor cap and clean and gap the breaker points. They may be closed up.
