Last month I posted that a buddy of mine had picked up a 401 that was tight. With minimum effort he got it loose and running but she smokes quite a bit.

I advised he put it on a chisel plow and work it for awhile as this may loosen up any stuck rings.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated

I think your plan to run it a bit is a good one for starters. The 401 tractor doesn't have valve seals. If the felt wicks in the rocker arms are gone or replaced with pipe cleaners, you'll burn extra oil. If you're talking about the 401 engine, ignore my comments.

I would suggest against new rings and the hone job....the last set of rings I bought cost almost half as much as I could have had sleeves and pistons for. The labor is exactly the same either route and with sleeves and pistons you know exactly what you have. For the few doolars saved, I would rather do it once and do it right.

If she smokes while pulling hard its rings and or roughness on cylinder wals from slight rust casingthe sticking. If its slght it may polish out and stop if not its time for a cylineder hone and new rings.

If she doesn't smoke much while working and a lot during idling down its valve guides and seals. Guides can be pressed out and replaced or knurled and new seals installed to stop this smoke.
