Good Evening fellas. Got the sleeves all in the block last night after I let the JB Weld cure for about 36 hours. Also put a thin coat of High Temp RTV silicone on the o-rings and the bottom inch of the sleeves before I slid them in. (Trying to get away from ANY leaks). The camshaft, lifters, crankshaft, pistons/rods and new rod bearings @ .002 went in tonight. Got the mains and rods torqued. Need to get some safety wire for the bolts for each though. (Have a buddy with some extra from his hot rod). Also got the oil seal put into the timing cover. Is it just me, or is the new seal much thinner depth-wise than the original (Original being about 3/4" thick VS. the new at about 3/8")?

Now for my question. I went to re-install the governor on the tractor. Now in my shop manual, if the timing marks on all the gears line up, the governor should be at 25 degrees if you look at the magneto end. All I could find on the governor gear were two very faint marks. Lined it up with the camshaft mark, and it puts the magneto side in almost a vertical position. Is this right? It doesn't seem correct to me. I looked the gear on the governor over time and time again. I'll be darned if I can't find any markings anywhere else. I am not going to get the timing cover on until I get this figured out. I can try to post a picture of the gear layout, but doubt that we will see much. Trying to get the engine in and front pedestal back on by Friday so I can sandblast Saturday and Sunday.. Stuck and troubled..... ..... ..... ..

Get your governor in time as described by L.Lamp and pay no attention to the punch marks. Just make darn sure your cam is in time first. To be sure the cam is in time do this: looking at the tappets on cylinder number 4, rotate the engine till the exhaust tappet is closing (going down). Continue to rotate the engine till the intake tappet starts to open (going up). Continue to rotate the engine till the two tappets are the same height. There is a place where the exhaust tappet is going down, the intake tappet is going up and they get lined up with each other. At this point, the crankshaft should be at the TDC position (piston would be at the top of the cylinder). If it is not, move it till it is. With your cam in time, install the governor like L.Lamp described and bolt on your cover and you are timed. Bruce

I am also rebuilding an SC. Installed the governor yesterday and will put on the oil pump and pan today. The small crankshaft gear has one dot on it. The big cam gear has two and one opposite each other. The one dot crankshaft gear goes between the two dots on the cam. The one dot on the cam gear goes between the two dots on the governor gear. These register at top dead center. When this happens, the magneto drive lug should be 25 degrees past horizontal with counter clockwise rotation of the governor gear. If this is not true, check to see that the crankshaft and cam gear are in proper register. You could be a tooth or two off. Make sure you have a thrust washer behind the cam gear and the spring and plunger are in the end of the camshaft before you install the cover. Good luck!!
