Worst Tractor Company Management Decision?

The worst decision that sticks in my mind was made by International Harvester (IH). (I assume it is true.) When Ford came out with the patented 3-point hitch, all the other tractor makers were scrambling around trying to develop a similar hitch without creating a patent infringment. IH developed the "Quick Hitch", which in my opinion is a better system than the 3-point hitch. John Deere asked to purchase the rights to use the Quick Hitch on their tractors and IH said "No". Had IH said "yes", tractors and implements may have had a different look today?

I'd say it was Clausen downgrading the VA Series to promote the SC; a 160 cu.in. engine and a 6 speed in the VA would have been legendary!

I would say when Cochshutt invented the live PTO and did not patten it. They lost a bundle there.
Walt

PS I have a 56 Cochshutt 35 with the first live PTO an it works great.

I would go along with Don and add something also. The Allis three point system that was turned upside down. If a plow comes unhooked from underneath, then the plow would flip over on top of you and club you on the head. I was told that people would hook a log chain to the bottom arm and up to the frame for safety.

How about I H turning down JOhn Deere in 1945 (not sure if it was 45 or 46 but there abouts). Where is I H now and what is John Deere doing? Case wasn't the only one that had poor management.

FYI. The first 3-point hitch was not on a Ford tractor. It was on a tractor built by the David Brown company and had the Ferguson system. It was called the Ferguson-Brown. One of these is in the Henry Ford Museum.

The Case company keeping Leon Clausen as President for way too long probably doomed the company to a long slow death.

I agree with Don, but will add Case selling the patent rights for a power angle tilt blade for dozers over 150hp to caterpiller in 1969 for $30,000

How about Harry Fergusons' heirs that didn't renew the patent for that three point hitch? All other companies then adapted it. That has to be high on the list.
