I am looking at a 885 that has a bad rear end and was wondering how good these tractor are? It was a state tractor and is in good condition. But you never know till you open one up. just trying to find out the good, bad or ugly about these tractors.

The bad rearend thing would worry me, it could cost quite a bit to fix, but overall, they are great tractors, dependable, plenty of power and fairly easy to work on.

Friends had one new in 1972, now just shy of 10,000 hrs on it. 1 radiator, 1 waterpump, 2 clutches, 1 set trackrod ends, 1 rear lift rod, 3 sets rear tyres, 1 fuel lift pump. Tractor was brought because Massey-Ferguson failed to deliver an orderd 148 tractor due to industrial action at the time at the Perkins engine plant. A bit more heavy buit tractor than the M-F 135 tractor we had, not as "handy" or manuverable, but would easly out pull it. Both the M-F 135 and the D.B.885 have been very good tractors and are both still on the farm. The D.B. did a lot of the work normally done by the bigger M-F 168 we had which was forever at the dealers with the gearbox and the back-end being repaired untill it was swapped in for a Ford 6600 in 1978.

I've got a 995 and love it. Do a search here and you will find lots of comment.
