I have a 460 that I rebuilt. It would not run when I finished with it. Found out that the return valve in the fuel tank was gummed up and was flooding the injector pump. Cleaned the small valve in the tank and the old lady came to life. Just make sure that you have fuel going to the pump and that it does not flood itself. HTH

Check the fuel? in reply to louisville ohio, 09-23-2007 10:23:30
If you're positive the timing is correct (not 180 degrees out of time), fuel is getting to the pump, it has good compression, there is a minimum of 400 rpm cranking speed, then it should start. Exception: fuel! I once worked on a tractor where a hired hand put GASOLINE in the diesel fuel tank. A diesel engine will not start or run on gasoline! I drained the tank, replaced the filters, got diesel fuel to the pump, and it started after a little cranking. If you're sure it has diesel fuel in the system, better look at the pump again to make sure it's not installed 180 degrees out of time. It can appear to be correct. The timing mark on the flywheel can be set at 4 degrees BTDC and the scribed lines in the fuel pump window can be in alignment, but the pump is sending fuel to #4 instead of #1. It will send vapors out the exhaust, but it will never start! I've seen this happen twice. You'll need to remove the injection pump, give the pump 1/2 turn, and reinstall it. Just double check.

I put new fuel in straight from diesel pump at gas station, have installed pump every time 4 btc
shows at timing mark. Have put in 180 degrees out plus where it should be. It doesn't fire anywhere. I've had pump on and off 8 times very frustrated. I've done everything but check compression and can't find compression tester for diesel. I will check again to make sure pump is in right. I appriceate feedback. I'm just assuming its probably pistons which I can't really afford to put anymore $$$$ towards. Thanks Tim
