I have an opportunity to buy a case 1030 but I'm concerned about the cracked head/sleeve notes I've read on this forum. Is there a way to quickly test for this when viewing the tractor, ie, look for bubbles in the radiator, take a compression check, etc?
Thanks, crb

like roger said, make sure there are no bubbles in the radiator. also be careful since a mechanic told me those blocks are prone to cracking sice it's just a Case 930 block bored out bigger which made them somewhat weaker. not real thrilled with mine right now. it had a TOTAL of 8 cracks on the deck of the block. not trying to turn you off of it just want you to be carefull. i bought a pile. it was all fine when i bought it but now i'm looking at over a $3000 overhaul plus a new block. just look to see if the radiator has bubbles. if it does just walk away
Good luck

Make sure the radiator is totally filled to the top of the neck. Start the engine. If bubbles appear, there is a problem with sleeves or a head. My 1030 has never had head or head gasket problems. The problem was always sleeves until I replaced them with Sealed Power sleeves. I have 8 tractors, and the 1030 is my favorite.
