I recently asked a question about rod cap orientation on my 800 gasser. I thought I had it right, but now I'm really confused. Many of the pics in the Case shop manual show the caps with the bolt heads on the camshaft side, but the instructions I finally found are really confusing me. The Case shop manual says the caps and rods are all numbered and the number goes on the cam side, they can only be put in one way. So here's the issue- I checked and my #1 rod cap is numbered so that the cap bolt heads would be on the cam side and the other 3 are numbered so the heads would be opposite the cam!!!

So 75% chance the #1 is wrong and it makes sense the heads should be opposite the cam. Anyone have a 100% definitive answer? I kind of doubt only the #1 would be different from the rest.

Thanks- I read and re-read the manual in both the gas and diesel sections and finally figured it was like you said. That one cap and rod sure threw a wrench in the whole thing! Just have to put the oil pan on and attach the gas lines. She might be running by tomorrow.

When reinstalling the connecting rods, the bearing caps must be positioned AWAY from the camshaft! That's where the rod has its greatest strength. The stamped numbers on the rods SHOULD be on the camshaft side. The positioning of the rod caps is more important than numbers. It's possible that someone has numbered a rod or rods improperly. The proper torque is 95-105 ft.-lbs.
