while replacing 2 nd gear in my 580 case with a 4 spd. tranny i checked the clearance between 2nd and 3rd countershaft gears and found it to be miles out . upon removing the pinion shaft i found that the retaining washer that sits between the oil slinger gear and spacer was missing and this is probably the problem . my query is the spacer between the washer and 4th gear has a small hump on the inside and one on the outside .. what are they for and what rotates the slinger as it has indentation on the hub also thanks for your help sam

Oil slinger driven by third/fourth gear in reply to sam un ont, 09-11-2007 13:40:46
The purpose of the oil slinger (which is driven by the third/fourth gear) is to throw oil into the upper oil galleries when the tractor is in neutral. That lubricates the input shaft bearings which would otherwise run dry. The washer that holds the slinger in place is next to the front spacer on the pinion shaft. The dimple on the washer is likely keyed into the third gear on the pinion shaft.
