On the side of the clutch housing there are 2 holes about 3 or 4mm in diameter. You put a rod in it and it locates with a hole in the flywheel. One hole is for TDC the other is for spill timing, they are marked. Sorry, can"t remember which side of the tractor they are on!

Thanks Corey, but what I need to know is how do you locate tdc on #1 piston to do valve lash adjustments? Sorry, my previous question wasn't specific enough.

I am assuming that this is a david brown. The injection pump has two timing specs depending on you serial number. Prior to 11414528 is 10 degrees and 11414528 and after is 20 degrees.
Remove the pump drive gear cover on the timing gear cover. When you turn the engine over by hand you will see a single timing mark on the pump gear. Align that with the double mark on the idler gear. Also there is a scribe mark on the pump flange. This mark is located on the pump flange next to the nut the fastens the pump that is licated at the 10:00 position looking from the back of the pump. That line should match the line on the inner timing cover.
