the saga continues. i have to pull the pinion gear in order to replace 2nd gear and in order ti do this the bull gears must be removed. my manual states in order to do this that the complete axle housing be removed. is it possible to just remove the wheel and slide to axle out far enough to get clearance for the bull gear or is that just too easy. the vintage is in the late 60,s. plus if the housing must be removed is there any easy way to break it from the diff housing sam

No need to remove the axle housing. in reply to sam un ont, 09-07-2007 12:04:55
When the bull gear nut is removed, the axle is only being held in place by the pressure fit of the inner axle bearing. Remove the wheel, then pry between the two axles. The axle without the nut will move out, but will force the outer axle seal out with it. No problem! When done with repairs, the axle seal can be pushed back into place.
