I have a 401 that has the gear on the adjusting screw for the right lift arm stripped. The parts breakdown shows the gear and the screw as one piece. How do you remove the screw and the gear from the crank housing and can just the gear be replaced?

Is this like your system? There is a little set screw in the gear teeth diameter. This is like my 630. I had to clean it up very good to find the set screw. If you take the set screw out the gear will come off the adjusting handle.
