Case 990 Steering problem

Hi all -

I have a '79 Case 990 (David Brown). The steering is doing funny things. If you try to turn left, you have to crank the wheel over and over and over...if you try to turn to the right, it turns so fast that it will literally jerk the wheel out of your hands. It will also jerk to the right spontaneously on its own.

I've been told the problem may be the hydraulic filter. I've ordered one, and will try that (for $35 it's worth a shot, and won't hurt anyway).

I'm wondering if anyone else has suggestions for me to look at?

The hydraulic filter had no effect on the steering - the bucket and three-point hydraulics work a lot better, but no luck on the steering.

Anybody have any thoughts at all???
