Serial #5150520 (sayes 47) engine # 51495 My grandparents baught this VAC new and my dad has said they always said they baught it in 46. This engine has the cast tapered fit water pump pully. Is this engine Continental built or Case built? So is this a 47 model built and sold in 46 or was my grandparents wrong in there memory? If it was sold in 46 can I call it a 46 because I will be makeing a sign to honor my grandparents and I want to put the corret information on it.

Case model year in that era was 01 OCT through 30 SEP. The '47 model tractors were available in the last quarter of '46, correctly stated it is still a '47 model.

If original, your 5 digit engine serial should be preceded by VAB-124 or VAC-124, those are Case built.

All VA series used a Case designed engine. These were built by Continental from 1943 to very early 1948. In 1948, Case took over the production of this engine. The basic engines were virtually identical. One difference is the water pump. The Continental water pump will have a date code that was not cast on Case parts... Gene

Thanks Gene, I believe you are right that Case designed the Continental engines.

The VAB-124 was used as late as 1948 and it's replacement VAC-124 was phased in prior to 1948 and continued into 1949 when it was redesignated A47.

Aside from the VAA-124, which is defiantly Continental, I believe some of the later VAB-124 and all of the VAC-124 were Case built just from working on the 40's VA and recording tractor/engine serial nrs at shows. I was trying to make some kind of chronological sense between tractor model nrs and engine serial nrs for VA series tractors.

Anyway, I spent yesterday and most of today working on an early 1950's Caterpillar wheel loader. Installed a Benedix brake master cyl (made in China) plus other parts and got the brakes working. Replaced the generator with a 24v Delco alternator (made in China) and rewired.

I don't doubt that down the line someone is going to be positive it is Chinese built.

Joe

You can easily circumvent the year bought/year model,by stating on your that it's a '47 model purchased in the fall of '46. BTW...I wish I had my grandpa's old tractor! You're a lucky man, there!

HI. It is a 1947. Tracror companies were like car co., they brought out the new tractors in the fall of the year or late summer. Your tractor is one of earlier ones, made and bought in 46 but called a 47. I don't remember when Case changed over to their production for the new year. It was not the first of the year. Hope this helps. Charley.
