49 SC Hydraulic problem

Thanks to Caseman 44 I now have a lift bail and hydraulic lift cylinder for my SC. It worked fine the first few tries then quit and began making a growling/ grating-type sound inside the PTO area when I engaged the lever. As I say it worked fine the first few tries, then quit so the cylinder and pump were both working initially, I bled the line but that did not make a difference.

Can one do damage by holding the lever too long? The PTO turns fine, so that is not the problem.

Anyone have any clues as to what the problem is? Does anyone have a schematic of the drive assembly? Pump? Thanks in advance

if oil did not solve the problem, there is a 40 or 50 roller chain that drives the pump, just in side the rear housing, on my 54 SC it was broke, (had no pressure when i bought it.

Drained the fluid--about 71/2 qaurts in the box, must be about two quarts in the cylinder and hoses. Took filter out and viewed through hole--chain is in place--not the problem. Waiting to get a new filter and add 9 qaurts of fluid, then try it again. Hope it works. If not will be posting again for "expert" help.

I got to thinking--Could the system be low on fluid as the new cylinder i put on was empty. Any idea how much fluid that would hold? I suppose I should try adding more fluid and see if that solves the problem.
