Hi, I have a 54 SC, and was wondering if this tractor would have enough horsepower to run a 7 foot finish mower. I would like to purchase either a 6 foot or a 7 foot, but I dont know if either one will work well. Also, will the top link of the eagle hitch be able to hook in the eye on top of the platform, or will I need to make a stronger bracket and hook it somewhere else. Will the pto shaft be at too steep of angle, or does it work ok with a mower since it is so high on the tractor. Is a Buehler a good mower? Thanks for reading this long post, John.

We ran a 6' Case "bush hog" on our 53/54 SC. No problem with power on heavy grass, weeds and small brush. Our Texas place was realtively flat but never had any problems with lack of power mowing with the SC using a JD #9 cycle bar type hay mower in northwestern Colorado with very steep slopes. Its drive shaft did run at a very high angle and we had one come apart even though it was geased daily. As said though U joints are relatively inexpensive.

If you are on flat or rolling ground I think it would have no problem with a 7'finish mower either.

I have been using a 6ft New Holland Finish mower on my DC eagle hitch for 4 years. I would recommend you get a second eye mount for the top of the PTO housing and use a long pin to anchor the top link. You will find that you cannot lift the rear of the mower off the ground.. the geometry is wrong...I have been told that if you raise the top link mounting point on the mower you can over come this problem. Since I only use the mower on my own property I don't care if it rides on the ground all the time. It does make changing the mowing height a bit of a pain I have to use a floor jack to raise the rear end far enough to pull the wheels. The PTO shaft angle will be fairly steep but I keep them well greased and so far, knock on wood, no problem...U joints are not prohibitively expensive...

As to power I also use the mower occasionally on my VAC On that machine the Eagle hitch lifts it correctly and the PTO shaft is straight. Heavy grass and a hill are a bit much for her however, power wise. I would think an SC could easily handle a 6ft...heavy grass and hills may be pushing it with 7'
