400 oil question

I'm restoring a Big 400 for Show-Pull-Work. I have found one of the PTO bearings could allow oil to transfer between the trans-axle and the hydralic system. The two levels look like the same level and with the newer tractor hydralic fluid could I drill a hole in the front part of the PTO and make it all one oil resvoir? Will this work?

Hy-Tran is a 10w oil, it is recommended by Case for all hydraulic systems, new or old. I don't believe it is thicker than ATF.

We combine the systems whenever we can and eveyone works great.

Which oil level do you go by? I have it back together with the resvoirs combined.

The manual for my 400 says to use automatic transmission fluid in the hydraulics. Hy- tran might be too thick.

the transmission and differential use 80w90 and the resevoir for hydraulics uses the much thinner hy-trans. Don't think 80w90 would work so well thru the hydpump. gobble

I was thinking that was the case when the hydralic oils available back in 56 would not work in a gear transmission but with the new improved anti-wear additives in Hy-Tran I could use just one.
