This happened to me on a VAC. I think the distributors are nearly identical. On mine, the camshaft had come loose in the cam gear. The woodruff key also became worn and very loose. This allowed the cam to change positions in the gear as the motor turned. When the cam would open a valve, it would retard some, and when a valve would close, valve spring pressure would push on the tappet and cam lobe forcing the cam to lurch ahead a little bit. This means that as the cam rotated, the cam was constantly jerking from a retarded position to an advanced position. If you feel the distributor while the engine is running, you may find that is is shaking almost violently. This jerking motion of the camshaft is transmitted right to the distributor and that is too much for the gear pin to handle and it breaks. Bruce
