Working on my 730 last night. Must have bent the wrong thing. Charge rate won't go down below 30 amps and voltage stays 17 plus. Seems it makes no difference what I do now it doesn't want to change. I was messing with it because it would charge, taper and cut out after starting but fail to pull back in before the battery was discharged. I have an I&T manual which barely mentions the charging system. Please help!!! Tom

I wouldn't rule out a generator failure but it is far more likely the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator maintains the voltage on the generator terminal by controlling the current through the field. If the field current is zero, there is no output. If the field current is max, the voltage will climb to well above 15 volts (17 is not uncommon with this failure). If you have the 17, you must fix this or it will destroy your battery quickly. I would pull off the cover of the voltage regulator to see if the contacts move freely. Sounds like the contact that controls field current is welded together. If the contacts are free and clean, start the engine and watch them to see if one of the contacts is "regulating". While watching the voltage, push down on either contact to see if the voltage changes. If the spring is too tight, you might get high voltage.

If things still aren't working correctly, remove the wire from the field terminal of the generator. If the voltage drops to less than 13 (may take a minute or two to get down there), the problem is either a short in your wiring or the voltage regulator.

Your description sure sounds like the regulator is either shot or needs serious spring adjustment. Certainly, the generator is good (unless the removal of the field wire does not reduce voltage).

It was the voltage reg. I must have fried something in it. Checked out OK on the bench tests but the output is now a serious stutter. Like the coils in the fine wire winding are open. Thanks Tom
