8 volt battery for the 6 volt DC CASE? Any discussion?

I have ofter wondered about this...my DC could use a little more cranking power. At a recent tractor show at the county fair and fellow had a CASE D with an 8 volt battery in it. Said it worked fine and said he did nothing else to the electrical system. Is that true? (Apparently 8 volt are a little pricey!) DCs seem to be a bit hesitant on cranking from what I am told...sort of their nature..... ...

I HAVE HAD MY VAC SINCE I WAS A KID AT HOME IN THE 50'S. ALWAYS STARTED IT WITH HAND CRANK, IT MIGHT START WITH A NEW BATTERY IF THE TEMP. WAS 72 1/2.
PUT A GM ALT. AND 12V BATTERY, CHANGED THE LIGHT TO SEAL BEAM. STARTS GREAT AND I CAN SEE AT NIGHT.
ONLY WAY TO GO IF IT IS A WORKING TRACTOR.

I have always been stubborn on keeping tractors original 6v. However my DC will probably get converted to 12v at some point. At temperatures below 50F it just doesn't have the power to crank it over. The inconvenience of the 8v would probably win out over the extra cranking power.

I plow snow with a DO on 6v. It'll crank over just fine, even at -20F. The key is more amps. I have a pair of 6V batteries that give me 1200 CCA. They are wired in parallel so that it stays 6V. The orchard tractors had the battery box relocated to the right of the steering column, I just added one on the left as well.

In my opinion, the 8v battery makes life too complicated.
1. Will your old generator put out the 10 volts it takes to charge an 8 volt battery?
2. What do you use for a battery charger?
3. What do you jump it with?
4. It will shorten the life of 6 volt bulbs.
5. To PROPERLY adjust the voltage regulator, it takes a professional with a test bench.

If 6 volts won't do it and you want reliability, install a 12 volt alternator system. The original systems were built to run all day long with a low charge rate maybe 3-8 amps. If you don't run your tractor for several hours per starting, you're not getting the battery charged up sufficiently whether it's a 6 or 8 volt battery. A 12 volt alternator works better for frequent starting with short run times. Immediately after starting, the alternator will begin recharging at a high rate maybe 30-40 amps. This provides a much quicker battery recovery than the old generator/regulator systems.
6 volt internal regulators are also available to install in 12 volt alternators. This will give the advantages of an alternator and still retain the 6 volt system.

You can install a rebuilt 12 volt Delco alternator for about $40-45, bulbs and battery not included.

DCs do seem to crank slowly...I have single 0 cables moved the ground point close to the starter motor and had the starter overhauled. Still cranks much more slowly than my VAC...but she starts just as quickly....

Yes 8 volt will work just fine and yes it will make world of difference in cranking. 6 volt gen. will put out plenty but you will need to have regulater tweeked to alow it to do so. I ran 8 volt in GMC truck for many years. You do not have to change anything.

Hi Gene! Im planning on being at portland 1 day this year. A new job and very little accumulated vacation time makes it hard to get away!Downsized the Case herd drastically! 18 tractors went to a guy in Virgina.! More room and less repairs! Later!

We have a late DC w/ high comp. head & dome pistons. The best 6V battery & 2/0 cable would barely turn ther ol'e girl over in the Winter. Tried 8V, but burned out the armature in the Gen. So, we converted to 12V.. Had the 6V Gen converted to 12V so everything looks original.

Most six volt starting problems are caused by battery cables being too small. If you use 2 00 battery cables and your starter is in good condition you should not have any problems. Most battery cables you buy today are designed for 12 volt use therefore they are lighter gauge than necessary for 6 volt usage.

Ya, I know a dude who has a 8 Volt in his A-C B. Technicly, you could put a 12 in it and it work work just fine if you only heald the starter for a few seconds, but you wouldn"t want to cause if you held it to long you would burn it up. 8 Volt wouldn"t do this.

I have a 53 Dc and the best thing I ever did to that tractor was to change it to 12 volt! Yes its not original but it will start every time even on some of the coldest Indiana days! Its not that hard to do! Doug
