I have a 1958 JI Case backhoe/loader with a bad diesel engine. Cast into the block on the right side is GD157A601. The block has cracks in the web between the cylinders top and bottom.
It is also missing one rod and piston.
If I can find parts I will try to repair the cracks.
Otherwise I need help figuring out what other engine will fit.

Darrell, Terratrac DT-34 also used the GD 157 engine, it had a slightly different governor but I think the block was the same. The lower bores are repairable , but may be cost prohibitive. There are at least 4 shops in
the country that can do the repair . one in Mn,
and their other shop out west ,one in cal,and
one in Md . I do o/a cast iron welding but I don"t have big enough ovens to do a block. I know
the fellow in Md does Z series continental blocks.

Cracks in the bottom webs cannot be repaired. Gas engine would be much easier to find.

I have considered a gas engine. Same problem, where do I look?
What is the reason that the bottom web can not be repaired?

The crack between the sleeves on the bottom allow antifreeze into the crankcase. Welding the crack to get it tight, and true enough to seal up against the sleeves is almost impossible. Even if it did seal up the stress would crack it again right beside the weld. Even if you could find someone to weld it no one would guarantee that it would not crack again. It is a big problem on the Z series continental engines in the TO fergusons.
