Older case 1370. Overfueling badly. melting turbos, burning paint off of mufflers, flames out exhaust. Checkand overhaul injectors and pump. Checked timing. Replaced all filters. Adjusted valves. Still way too much black smoke on acceleration and with only a slight load. What have we missed? Aug. 1, 2007

Yeah I would like to know what he trouble is in reply to John's Shopmobile Ltd., 08-01-2007 08:18:13
If u have a plugged intake the exhaust isn't going to be hot. To much timing maybe, like the other poster said dampener may be slipped. Or some other internal problem. Tom

Plugged intake will indeed cause excessive exhaust temps. That relatively speeking cool air entering an engine helps cool it too.

Another thought: could the valves be out of time? Let us know what you find.

Will add to all other good advise you should take strato cleaner off an clean also i found a steel reinforcing ring just in front of strato tube blocking air flo somewhat in 1370 i worked on.

Have you checked the actual timing? Maybe the damper pulley slipped on hub.

sounds like you did the hard stuff now take out the air cleaner and see if there is a bird or rat nest in it, sounds like a air restriction can you spin the turbine on turbo?

The German Bosch pump is very easy to adjust. There are 2 adjustments that control fuel delivery. At the front of the pump is the rack stop. It is under a round cap with 2 flats to fit a 3/4" wrench. Under this is a screw with a number of washers. Usually 4 or 5. This controls the maximum fuel delivery of the pump. More washers gives less fuel and cooler running. Not unusual for a farmer at the local fair pull to remove these washers for more smoke and power.

The second adjustment is at the rear, bottom of the pump under a cover with 4 10mm head bolts. under this is a screw and lock nut. Loosen the lock nut (10mm socket) and back the screw out for less fuel then retighten the nut. 1 or 2 turns may be required.

As always when working around diesel components, throughly clean all surfaces before removing any parts to prevent dirt fron entering the system... Gene
