What motor oil would you recommend in an 800 diesel?

Case STILL reccomends 30w in the summer NOT 15w40 in anything built before the magnums, a good partsman would know this for this is what Case tells them. Case does not reccomend multi weights for the older Case or IH engines, finally Rotella is not a good ag oil, IH #1 is much better.

Use Shell Rotella 15-W-40.

Only reason case manual does not recommend multi-grade oil is because it was not available when the tractor was made... Gene

10W-30 and other multiviscosity Engine Oil blends were available from before WWII. The Pratt&Whitney Radial engines used in many aircraft specified multi-weight. I'm guessing that it was perhaps developed just for that sort of extreme temperature usage. Remember, it's 40 below up there at 25000 feet.

I would recommend following what the operators manual says >>>

[Quote] Engine Crankcase: Use a stable, high quality "Heavy Duty" type engine lubricating oil designed primarily for Diesel engine usage. The oil should have a service designation of either "Service DG -- Favorable Diesel Engine Service", "Service DM -- Moderate to severe Diesel Engine Service (also referred to as "Series 1") or "Service DS -- Severe Diesel Engine Service" (also referred to as "Series 2 or 3"), depending upon the operating conditions and sulphur content of the fuel [unquote].

The manual further specifies the following viscosity table...
Above 80F use: SAE 30-W, 80F to 32F use: SAE 20-W, 32F to-20F use: SAE 10-W, Below -20F use: SAE 5-W

Nowhere does Case recommend using multi-viscosity, high detergent engine oil.

For all our Case Diesels we use Sunoco "Super C" SAE 30-W, which is service designated as: Service DS. Which is also recommended for our Cat D4D Diesel engine.

if you work it use 30W in reply to Roger R, 07-29-2007 19:48:24
I had this discussion with the case dealer near me. They stated the bearing journals will appreciate the straight 30. Tom
