Hi all, bought a VAO couple o fmonths ago and just did tune up replacing solid copper plug wires, plugs, points, rotor, cap, condensor, and did a rebuild of carb. Just fired it up this afternoon and it ran fine for about a half hour then started to run rough and when I let the throttle down it died and would not restart right away, have tried another coil and that does not seem to be the culprit, have already replaced the alt. (12v single wire) a month ago as well as the two switches. Help please.
Thank you Linn

You likely burnt your new points by running 12 volt through them. Take the points out so you can see them really good and see if they are bad. File them good and if you can make them look decent, you could possibly reuse them. Then BEFORE starting the tractor, buy a generic voltage reducer
and install it in the ignition wire between the switch and distributor. Go to your local auto parts store and ask for a voltage reducer for a 1970s Dodge car. This will drop the voltage at the points and will still fire the plugs fine but won't be so "hot" as to burn the points quickly. My VAO burnt new points in only 5 minutes after I 12 volted it until I switched the coil from a 6 volt to a 12 volt model. GOOD LUCK
