My brother has a 1960"s Case 530 Bachoe.....he"s having problems with the power steering....you turn the steering wheel....and it barely moves the tires. He had the pump a part....it looks ok....had the flow control valve apart...(valve under the tank) said it moves freely....replaced one of the cylinders...

Still....having problems....

Any ideas?

Thanks Shawn

Hello,
I think you"re talking about two different 530"s. A 530 has one steering cylinder (Utility tractor) and 530CK has two cylinders (hydrostatic steering).
Best, Dennis....

I just did a 430 PS problem in reply to smcelhe, 07-20-2007 04:56:12
The 430 gas tractor pump was mounted to right front of engine and was gear drive off the cam gear of the engine. The drive gear on the pump had shearded the key and was just spinning on the shaft. My pump was junk,it had been run dry to many times. The tractor had the control valve on the cylinder down under the radiator. Long story made short, I replace pump with a old ford pickup PS pump belt drive mounted it on the left side of engine and it worked great. Check your system to make sure pump is putting out. bjr

Thanks for the info....

The pump is gear drive and apprears to be working...he"s taken the lines off the cylinders and the pumped sprayed fluid.

I guess that doesn"t mean the pump is putting out enough pressure....

Any other things to check?

Shawn

Almost has to be the steering valve if the steering wheel turns and the wheels dont...but could be a badly leaking two way cylinder. If the steering wheel does not turn then likely the pump or a valve is sticking shut. I dont know the set up for that tractor.

The steering wheel turns.....but the tires don't (they will turn a little bit if you turn and turn and turn the steering wheel.) The one cylinder is new....the other has been rebuilt.

My brother had the steering valve apart...said the plunger (or what ever is in it) moves back and forth. Could it still be bad????

Sorry for the poor wording...my brother could explain it better.

Any ideas?

Shawn

Sounds like you have a seal problem in your steering valve. The oil may be leaking past the "plunger" and into the return line instead of the pressure line. Basically it takes a lot of pressure away from the cylinder and dumps it back to the other cylinder. To check this, check the pressure at one cylinder with a pressure gauge.

Should there be seals/o-rings on the steering valve plunger?
