i have a case 320 wheel tractor. i recently found a rebuilt starter i went to put it on tried to turn the engine over i was successful but after awhile some thing happened to it its gets hot and refuses to turn over (starter) so i put the original back on but i put new stuff in it tightended the back plate now it turns over fine my question is dose the starter have to be wired 4 poss ground just like generator and voltage relay ???

No, the starter does not care which polarity it works at and most 12 volt conversions stay with the 6 volt starter, you had a problem with the starter that maybe should be pursued but otherwise you are ok. Good luck mEl

i have been told that you are right it doesnt matter which way they are wired as far aa the rotstion of the starter but all 300 series are positive ground and all came from the factory with 12 volt. you cant have the starter wired negative ground and the charging system positive. how would you accom-lish that anyway????? and why
