A FRIEND, OVERHAULED HIS TRACTOR. SLEEVES, PISTONS RINGS, BEARINGS,NEW RADIATOR, INJECTORS, THERMOSTATS,AND HAD THE HEADS REWORKED. ALL PARTS CAME FROM CASE. IN LESS THEN 40 HRS. IT HAD WORE THE OUTER LIPS OF THE OIL RINGS COMPLETLY SMOOTH. THERE WAS NO SCORING IN THE CYLS. COME TO FIND OUT THE CYL. KITS WERE NOT GENUINE CASE. SAME ON ALL 6 CYLS. THE DEALER SENT 1 UNIT BACK TO SUPPLIER AN THEY TOLD THEM IT WAS FROM DIRT IN ENGINE. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT THE RNGINE WAS CLEAN WHEN IT WENT BACK TOGETHER. ANY THOUGHTS.

Grit will ruin an overhaul in reply to JACK RAYBURN, 07-11-2007 16:08:07
Never trust sleeves to be free from grit. NEVER use gasoline to clean newly bored cylinders or new sleeves. That will cause the grit from the machining to sink deeper into the machining marks. Use hand cleaner. When you can rub a white cloth or paper towel in the cylinder bore or new sleeve and it's still white, it's ready to be assembled.

Bought a remanufactured 391 Ford gas engine for a truck years ago that did that. Machine shop that we took it said that the surface on the cylinders was to course and wore out the oil rings before they seated. They honed the cylinders and we installed new rings. Worked great.

I saw a 930 do the same thing a few years ago
and we found out that the dust was going
right into the engine because of no oil in the air filter and rust holes in the intake tubing
