Oil in Radiator ?

I am looking at buying a 500 diesel. My brother has looked at the tractor, and said the oil is black as a diesel should be, but he thought he noticed a little oil in the radiator. He said the antifreeze is nice and green, but thought he saw a little bit of oil. On this little bit of information, can anyone guess what might be the problem. The tractor is priced right but 230 miles away and I"m trying to figure out if it is a problem. The tractor appears to run fine according to my brother who is not a mechanic. Thanks for any help. Bob

I wouldn't be as concerned about having a little oil in the radiator as I would having coolant in the oil pan. You should probably have your brother check to see if there is any coolant in the bottom of the oil pan by opening the drain momentarily.

This isn't anything you don't already know, but if the radiator hasn't been drained in many years, traces of oil in the coolant is common. Over the years it is so easy to use an oil-dirty funnel to add a little coolant. If there's no evidence of crankcase pressure in the radiator while the tractor is running, I would say there's nothing wrong.

Thanks, Glenn. I talked to the guy who owns it. Not a farmer, but a trucking company. They have owned it for a few years. He said they used it to pull a speed mover to drag their lot. He did say when it was hot out it might spill out a little antifreeze out of the radiator cap. But otherwise he seems to think things are OK. I appreciate your response and will go check it out.
