Case 580C newly rebuilt engine--need ether to start

I recently purchased a Case 580C TLB with 300 hours on a rebuilt 207 engine. It will not start without ether after the engine cools down. While cranking without ether a big cloud of white smoke puffs out the exhaust. After it starts and you are running it, a big cloud of white smoke will puff out the exhaust everytime you step on the gas from a idle or low rpm. The machine seems to have plenty of power and oil pressure guage reads 60psi at idle. I read that white smoke is caused from water leaking into head, but it does not go down on water and no oil in water. Also, engine oil does not rise and no water in oil. I was told the injection pump was replaced at the time of engine rebuild and it looks fairly new. Could the timing be off and cause these symptoms? Or is it something else? If timing, how do you set it? Thanks.

From your discription it sounds like the white smoke is indeed smoke from incomplete(cold)late combustion & not steam from a water leak. If it was steam it would dispate amost immediately after leaving the exhaust pipe. Also smoke from late combustion has a very distinct pungent smell & in some cases will make your eyes water. Adjusting (advancing) the timing should make the difference as long as it hasn't been overdosed continuously with either trying to start it. you may have broken piston rings or a cracked or burned piston.

Timing could be an issue with the hard starting. As for the smoking I had an Oliver 88 diesel that had the same problem. Water level never went down and oil never came up. Eventually the engine locked up. I found out that a very small amount of water was leaking into the exhaust side of the head. It sat for about 4 months during the winter went out to start it and the engine had stuck. Kinda baffled me being diesel. Chances are your tractor is leaking some water through the head "a very small amount" and it"s just burning it with the fuel. Another possibly for the hard starting when they changed the injection pump they mite have turned some extra fuel to it. I have a pulling tractor that you can run for hours let it sit 20 mins and have to give it a small shot of either. First thing I would do is check the timing, that mite just be your entire problem. If I remember we had a similar problem a good while back with our 580c. Well hope any of this mess helps. Have a great day.

Okay thanks for your advice. I am going to check the timing this weekend and hope it fixes the smoking and starting problems. Is it hard to put a new head gasket on?
