The tractor may have had a rebuilt engine installed at one time a nice serial number tag on the side kinda indicates. As near as I can tell the engine is a 148 B as it has the 3 bolt starter. The pinion has a 9 tooth drive and I think is proper for that engine. But we're going thru drives after maybe a weekend of use. The engine got started only a couple dozen times if that. Now pinion just spins and doesn't engage the flywheel. There were some 10 tooth starters for differnent tractors. What't the chance of us needing a 10 tooth instead of the 9 tooth starter that causing the drive to go out? We gotta get a handle of this as the bill just to replace the drive last time was $100. bjr

How does the teeth on the drive look after failure? Are the teeth damaged? If not, the internal workings of the drive are failing. Remove the starter drive and see how it meshes with the flywheel teeth. I would do this before you damage the flywheel if you havent already.
