So I finally caught the owner at home. He uses the line from the bleeder on the left axle, with a petcock type valve on it, to lower the 3 pt. It seems there's "something stuck" in the main control on the 3 pt valves. Seems like a fairly simple fix would be available. It sure does smoke! I'd say it needs a rebuild. He wants to wait to get his other 990 fixed before he sells it. So I have to wait and see.

Both the smoking and the hydraulic issue sound like expensive fixes to me. Is this a selectamatic or an implematic? I have schematics for the 880 Implematic somewhere around here, they might be close enough for you to diagnose the hydraulic problem.

Selectamatic or implematic? Well, it's a 6/2 tranny, no creeper, whitetop/brown belly. WHoch does that make it? For $800.00 or a thousand bucks it's cheap enough to maybe fix since it has new tires.

Just a thought but what age is the 990? A red one or a white/brown one?
Cheers, JV.

Red and white. Wish I could find exploded views of the 3 pt control on line.

hydraulics on 990 are a pain i would try to clean the lowering control valve first. Little diamond shaped plate right side sitting on tractor, two plugs underneath. there are spring, plunger, ball in one side spring plunger with a small screen in the other. if you drop it taking it out its gone. i use a magnet to pull them out polish with valve lapping compound or jewlers polish.

Well the guy just called me. Seems he is determined I should buy the tractor and says he's going to drop it off at the farm. "Go ahead and try it for a while and see if you think it's worth saving" he says. Puts me in kind of a pickle as I don't want any hard feelings, but I know he needs the money to rebuild his other tractor. Have to play it by ear I suppose.
