Found a beat up DB 990 locally. New rears, good fronts, covered in oil from halfway down the engine and back, looks like hydraulic oil. Owner is next door neighbors brother, he got the looks (!!!) not the mechanical abilities. He's got a tube running from what looks like the top of the left rear axle to the hydraulic dipstick hole. Says it runs strong but smokes a lot. Home made cab with a windshield wiper!
Neighbor says he's never fixed a thing in his life. Guy wants $1000.00. I need something around 55 hp to run my round baler and with a good 3 pt to move round bales. I know I can part the thing out for more than he wants, but I'm looking for opinions I guess. DB are supposed to be real good on fuel (diesel) and my Case 811B gas and Ford 850 gas real hogs for gasoline.

Any idea what the tube would have been there for?

Just a thought. If he's been running it for any length of time with THAT type of botch-up modification to the hydraulics, then the bearings in the back-end may well have been starved of lubrication and damaged. We used to see it a lot with tractors that had been running hydraulic hedge cutters and backhoes. If that is the case, WALK AWAY!!!
A DB would be a great tractor for what you want, but one that's been messed about is a really dodgy (and possibly expensive) prospect. Keep looking DB's sold well and with a little effort, you will find a good one.
HTH
Cheers, JV.

Hello Bret.

David browns were allways well Known to be easy on fuel right from the VAK1 up to the DB1694 the 990 is a very good pulling tractor with a good strong backend and horse power around 56/7 we here at home use a 1966 DB 990 selectomatic to power an internasional 440 baler but have now up dated the baler to a much bigger new holland and the 990 was under no stress at all.

David Browns dont get much respect over there all people think about is how much they will make scraping them im glad people dont think that way over here DBs are a well liked machine i my self have a 1210 and 1410 and beetween me my father and brother we have 43 DBs and my uncles use a fllet of DBs for contracting.

Any way let us now what your going to do.
