Man I Love to bale with my 800!!!,,, That was the favorite to bale with for years at my dads farm ....Just resurrected after 15 years sitting in the shed a 58, 800 ,, Should a walked away from it before I started turning wrenches on her , traded it for a porch floor and ceiling , I think CASE _O _MATIC is the most misunderstood tranny inthe lineup ,,, Get a I T book and some guages and you can walk right thru the problems that may be there ..Besides there is alot of knowledge on this forum .Best wishes Jim

FB,
You are looking at it the wrong way. The pto at 540 had an engine rpms of about 1450.
At 1450 rpms it was easy to control the forward motion of the tractor with the brakes. (assuming you are not using 1st and 2nd gears for baling.

We use our 800 COM Diesel only for planting and baling. Our planting rig pulls the IH 510 drill or JD 4-row corn planter behind a 10', single axle-roller, culti-multcher. This is about all she wants to pull in 5th gear direct-drive (some folks call direct-drive "high range"). When the draft or windrow become too heavy with the planting-rig or the baler, just kick-er'-down to torque converter drive (some call this "low range") and she will usually pull through the tough spot without skippin' a beat.

You can simulate "slipping the clutch" by dragging the brakes against the torque converter and the ground speed slows down while the engine & PTO RPM stay constant and pull the baler through the short term extra load.

The COM is an excellent tranny if the operator uses it to it's advantage.
