630 Trouble

I posted earlier about this shift fork problem. I lost the bolt and wire that hold the shift fork to the rail. I've drained the fluid and removed the covers from both the 4 speed and rear end. There was no bolt or wire to be found. But, I did find a small steel dowel pin looking thing, it's 3/8 in diameter and 9/16 long. It doesn't fit the dowel pin holes in either cover and I can't see anywhere for it to belong. It actually looks like a roller from a roller bearing. Now I have a missing bolt that has to be in there somewhere and a steel pin that isn't supposed to be in there. What gives?

Sorry to respond so late. Over ten hours of heavy mowing and no problems with the gears. A few oil leaks but no gear problems. Didn't have gaskets on hand when we put it back together, so used the blue gasket maker stuff. Should have used the red "heat resistent" stuff as the leaks came from the covers. The instructions said to let cure for 24 hrs. so I think the stuff melted a little bit as the transmission cases get awful hot from mowing all day in the heat. 24 hrs. wasn't enough time for the stuff to stiffen up. Next I'll have more trouble from silicone in my bearings I suppose. Live and learn.

This is not what you want to hear, but you might as well face the music, and start tearing her down. You may well have the bolt sitting between some gears and the roller may well be from a main differenial or brake bearing. One thing is certain. You've got some problems! LOL!

Lifted the wheels off the ground and can turn and inspect all gears and most bearings as all are open (with no seals) to get the oil bath. All gears and bearings look ok. The pin looks to be from a roller bearing but I'm guessing from a previous injury as it's obvious to me someone has had this tractor opened up before me. No gaskets, just silicone. Flushed out both gear cases with gallons and gallons of diesel fuel and fished nooks and crannys with a magnet again and still no bolt. Took the shift cover off a different 630 and put it all back together. Everything seems to be working again. Will run it all day tomorrow on the rotary mower so we'll see if that bolt comes back to haunt me.
