830 Head Gaskets

Picking up hay bales the other day, I noticed steam coming out of the breather on my 830CK. Never a good sign. I figure one or both of the head gaskets are leaking water (Hopefully that's all). In the parts book, I see two different head gaskets for different engine serial numbers (Mine is "prior to 2147269"). Are they interchangeable? Did one replace the other? Seems funny that there's two different ones when all engine years used the same heads.

Thanks for that! I didn't get your Email yet (Saturday 9PM Central) but hopefully it'll show up, soon. I pulled the rear head this morning, and got the part number off the head gasket. Whoever replaced it last used red RTV on the gasket. I'm guessing that's not the best way to seal a head gasket. I'm crossing my fingers that it's the head gasket leaking, and not the sleeve O-rings.

So nobody knows the difference in the head gaskets. Okay, well, I'll see if the lone remaining Case guy at my CASEIH dealership can remember anything.

Guess my email didnt go but there use to be like 4 gaskets now they only use 1 and they take fire rings on top of the sleeve one for each cyl. Also you need to know your sleeve protrusion because there are standard and oversize fire rings hope you have better luck than me.

This board has seemed a bity slower than normal for traffic the past few days. Are you sure its a head gasket? The breather(s) will show "some" "steam" vapor from the natural moisture in the engine. That"s one reason they have breathers. Different usage conditions and the weather may make the moisture show up more than other times. Anything from the exhaust or in the oil pan? What part book do you have? I forgot to look in my 63 Case book. Seems like there were 2 numbers for the 730"s too. I"ll try to look tonight. When I"ve inquired before about head gaskets the parts guys always say "you should double check the number off of the old gasket before they order". That"s a pain if you"re in a hurry but its good to have right number too. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. I'm kind of in the dark, here. I'm a little new to tractors, though not to engines in general, so I don't know for absolutely sure it's the head gasket, but I'm pretty certain I'm getting water in the engine. I didn't run it long enough to contaminate the oil, but there was some water on the dipstick. The amount of steam was far in excess of what I was getting when I was loading haybales a couple of weeks ago (or for that matter what I've ever seen from my tractor -- or anything else besides a tea kettle). There's also water on top of the rocker covers that leaked from around the vent tube. The temperature gauge also started rapidly climbing right after I noticed the steam. I shut it down before it got too high, so I don't think I caused any harm to the engine.

The last thing that makes me suspect it's a water leak is that I just recently replaced the thermostat and got a new radiator cap, so the cooling system is pressurized for the first time in years. I was thinking of pulling a head to see whether it has the fire-ring style of gasket before I order new ones. It'll be the first time I've ever pulled the head on a tractor, so there should be plenty to learn. I'm just trying not to create expensive lessons, if I can avoid it.

On my DC the water is getting into the oil from the bottom of the piston sleeves. There is a rubber o-ring gasket the goes bad and will cause water to get into the oil as these are wet sleeved engines.

Sorry, didn"t have a chance to look last night as we had company. BE VERY CAREFUL not to run these tractors hot. They "seem" to have a habit of craking heads if hot. I"ve also "heard" that either is bad for cracking these heads too. Is yours gas or diesel? If its a Diesel you can get some parts to interchange with the 1030"s as they had the same heads. But not if its gas as they didn"t make 1030 gaser"s. heads aren"t too bad to remove, a bit of a pain with the water manifold and their about 40lbs each. Good luck.
